Spring semester begins!

Earthwise Teachers

After a two month break for the holidays and winter weather, we started our spring semester last week. We have a full class this term and lots of exploring to do!

Since the winter rains came, the seasonal creeks at the Ranch are flowing strong and the water creates a whole new world for the children to explore. We love learning about the water and how it moves on the landscape!

Old logs make great boats! Everyone piles into the "boat" and we sail away!

In the winter, birds sometimes need help finding enough food. We love our bird friends so we made pinecone bird feeders with pinecones we found on the forest floor (we also learned about pine trees as part of this process) and covered them in peanut butter and bird seed.

Teacher Sarah reads a story while we drink rose hip tea. Most of our school days in the cold weather end with warm tea and storytime in our tipi before we walk back to our parents.

" Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water-bugs, tadpoles, frogs and mud-turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade in, water-lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies...sand, snakes, huckleberries, and hornets; and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education.
